There are many wonderful, and sometimes strange things written about in the Scriptures that are almost impossible for us a mere humans to imagine, let alone try to interpret in Ecclesiastical Embroidery. Two of those unusual things are the Seraphim and the Cherubim. Artisans of the past have grappled with these creatures, and provided some interesting interpretations. The powdering designs, dating from the glory days of Opus Anglicanum, give us some wonderful examples of these delightful interpretations of Seraphim and Cherubim. Last week, I shared an article on a recent purchase… Read more Mary Barber’s Six Winged Creature Drawing →
Old books are a mixed blessing. It is often wonderful to be able to purchase a rare book, especially if the book relates to Ecclesiastical Sewing and Embroidery. And such is the case with this rare title I purchased last fall. The book i is Mary Barber’s Some Drawings of Ancient Embroidery that I mentioned last fall. In its day, the book was highly regarded and is often referred to in many older books on the topic of Ecclesiastical Sewing. As the New Year begins, so too must new Ecclesiastical Projects. Epiphany will be here in a few short days, and then it is only a few weeks until Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Lenten Season. In preparing for Ash Wednesday, the black vestment set was reviewed. The altar and pulpit hangings are complete, and set awaits the completion of the chalice veil, burse, stole, chasuble and maniple to finish the low mass set. Although it would be wonderful to use the black chasuble on Ash Wednesday, that vestment… Read more Historical Use of Chasubles and History of Vestment →
Winter is settling in here in Northern Minnesota. At the moment, there is not much in the way of snow on the ground. But with the cold bleak skies, and sub-zero temperatures, it’s fun to dream of a mid winter escape. Daily I hear from clients who are heading off for a cruise, or to the warmer climes of Florida, Texas, and Arizona. There are even a few heading out to the tropical Hawaiian Islands. They sound like wonderful destinations for a winter get away. After all, they are escaping… Read more Ely Cathedral Event →

Greetings, and a Special Wish to all for a Happy New Year! Greetings to everyone following along with Ecclesiastical Sewing and Embroidery. The New Year has begun, and as the Holiday Season comes to a close, it is time to restore some order in the sewing room. The Christmas items being stored in the sewing room have been removed, purchases have been placed in the appropriate places (well, most of them have been), and the piles of papers are being sorted through and organized while I type. I hope to… Read more Happy New Year →
