The Meaning of INRI Jesus the King of the Jews: INRI stands for “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews” in Latin. Pontius Pilate, the leader of Judea for Rome, ordered this sign to be put above Jesus’s head when He was crucified. INRI’s meaning is more than just the words on the sign. It points out the strange situation of Jesus’s death: He was laughed at as a king, but is truly the greatest King, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies of a Messiah who would save humanity

Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, ‘Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.’ Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. ~John 19:19-20
