The church year has a long history of using specific colors to mark the various celebrations, feasts, and festivals of the church year. Certain colors transcend among all faiths. And then within various faiths, the color may vary according to use and tradition. An example would be some churches use Liturgical Fabrics with the color Violet or purple while others use Roman Purple. The images below show the beautiful Ely Crown Liturgical Brocade and Pugin Orphrey Trim. The most basic colors used in the church include white in some form… Read more Ely Crown Liturgical Brocade and Trim →

Advent will be upon us in a few short weeks. As many of us in the USA prepare for Thanksgiving, we must keep Advent in the back of our minds, because it will follow shortly on the heels of this scrumptious holiday. 1 1Roberts, Carrie. Green With White & Red Flowers. November 5th, 2016. Personal Collection, Ecclesiastical Sewing, Minnesota, 2016. Advent, being a season of preparation, gives our church life a time to pause and reflect on all things leading up to the blessed season of Christmas. As a contemplative time, it… Read more The Temple →

There are a few pastoral stole projects that need to be created in a relatively short period of time. The first stole is a Blue Advent stole. Blue is an alternate liturgical color frequently used by many churches for the season of Advent. The other liturgical color used during Advent is Purple. Since my church has used blue in the past, we will stick with the traditional color selection, and work on the goal of a new vestment set. I started a set last year, but was delayed by work,… Read more Silver Stars for Advent Stole: Part 2 →

When a new church vestment project is first taking fo starts with a sense of “designers block.” (Designer’s block is a close cousin to writer’s block). You know that feeling fear. It often begins with a blank piece of paper, an empty canvas for an artist, or a plain piece of unadorned fabric for a designer. No shape, no form, nothing. But how can one get beyond that void of emptiness and get on with the work of designing and creating a project? I think back to those long ago days… Read more Silver Stars for Advent Stole →

Sometimes a hand embroidery project is started, knowing it will be impossible to make its deadline. But for some unknown reason, that does not become a deterrent. So it is with the Advent Vestment Set currently spread all over my sewing room. There are bits of blue Silk Dupioni and broadcloth, and frames of blue and white on both work tables. Life always provides interruptions with any major Ecclesiastical Embroidery project, and this one is no exception. Meant to be a “quick” project of couching and outlining, this is going… Read more Time is Ticking Away →

Time is slipping away, and the Advent Pulpit Fall needs to get started. The Ecclesiastical Embroidery Design selected for the Pulpit Fall will be a combination of applique and couching stitches. (At least that is the plan for now). To aid with the placement of the applique pieces, I decided to transfer the Ecclesiastical Design to the Silk Dupioni using the prick and pounce method of design transfer. When I first learned about this technique for transferring an embroidery design, it took a year, maybe longer than that, before I took the… Read more Preparing the Advent Pulpit Fall Design →
