Today many gathered in our Nation’s Capital to mourn the loss of Antonin Scalia. We often fail to mourn the passing of those around us. But today, we will pause and mourn with those who were in attendance at the funeral. Today’s events were marked with the solemn dignity one expects at a State Funeral. The Clergy presiding over the service wore matching cream-colored vestments with tapestry orphreys. The pall was also part of the same vestment set, with matching tapestry orphrey bands. Other clergy in attendance at the funeral… Read more Funeral Vestments →

Sundays are a great day to relax and enjoy a good read. One of my favorite vestment books is an old classic on the topic of Liturgical Sewing. Like many books in my vast library on the topic of vestment making, Ecclesiastical Embroidery and the making of church linens, the book of choice for this evening is, well, vintage, if a book can be called that. Or perhaps classic might be a better term. However one looks at it, the book on my work table this evening (at least one… Read more Vestments and How to Make Them by Lilla Weston →

The making of Ecclesiastical Vestments has a long and wonderful history. But what becomes of vestments from bygone days? Much depends on the original materials of the vestment and of course how the vestment has been cared for. Some Ecclesiastical Vestments fall into disrepair, and are discarded, while others become timeless treasures. While searching around this weekend to see what is happening within the realm of Ecclesiastical Sewing, a series of articles on a treasure dating back hundreds of years was recently in the news. The reason? The vestment, a… Read more Treasured Vestments Westminster Chasuble →

Have you ever considered what Ecclesiastical Vestments are needed by your Pastor or Priest in order for them to do their job? We often sit in church week in and week out and never give the clothing worn by clergy a second thought. Worse yet, is there ever thought in the church budget to provide new items for the Pastor or Priest as they are needed? The answers to these questions in part may depend on the denomination of the clergy member. For simplicity’s sake, let’s focus on two different… Read more What Vestments Does a Priest or Pastor Need? →

As the New Year begins, so too must new Ecclesiastical Projects. Epiphany will be here in a few short days, and then it is only a few weeks until Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Lenten Season. In preparing for Ash Wednesday, the black vestment set was reviewed. The altar and pulpit hangings are complete, and set awaits the completion of the chalice veil, burse, stole, chasuble and maniple to finish the low mass set. Although it would be wonderful to use the black chasuble on Ash Wednesday, that vestment… Read more Historical Use of Chasubles and History of Vestment →
