That is a lot of green… What’s the Deal?

Why the Green? You may have noticed that as the seasons change and summer begins, many churches have started to adorn themselves in lovely shades of green. This marks the liturgical season known as Ordinary Time. Today, I’d like to take a moment to discuss what this season represents and why it’s symbolized by this vibrant color.

The symbolism of Green: Green is primarily used to symbolize the themes of hope and life. It is associated with the growth and vitality of life in nature, reflecting spiritual growth and life in the Church.

Liturgical Use

Green is the color most commonly used during “Ordinary Time.” This is the period in the liturgical calendar that falls outside the major liturgical seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter. Ordinary Time encompasses two periods: one between the Baptism of the Lord and Ash Wednesday, and the other between Pentecost and the First Sunday of Advent. This time is not “ordinary” in the sense of being commonplace, but rather it means ordered or numbered time.

Green Vestments in Ordinary Time

During Ordinary Time, the Church focuses on the continuous growth of its members in faith and their deepening relationship with Christ. The green vestments worn by the clergy during these times are meant to remind the congregation of their ongoing call to spiritual renewal and growth.

Thus, green vestments serve as a visual cue for themes of renewal and growth in the life of the Church, appropriate for the reflective and growth-oriented character of Ordinary Time.
