What is a Casket Pall?

casket pall

A casket pall is a ceremonial cloth that covers a casket during funeral services. Its use symbolizes respect for the deceased, equality before God, and the promise of resurrection. The tradition of using a pall can be traced back to medieval Europe, where it served as a symbol of a baptismal gown and a reminder of the deceased’s baptism and new life in Christ.

The pall is typically white, representing purity, holiness, and the joy of life to come after death. This use of white reflects the victory over death that Christ achieved. Historically, however, palls were not always white. In some traditions and during certain periods, black palls were used, reflecting mourning and the solemnity of death. Over time, with shifts in liturgical practices and a theological emphasis on resurrection and victory over death, white has become the more prevalent color.

The transition to white palls aligns with a broader liturgical movement that focuses on the theme of resurrection at Easter as central to funerals, emphasizing hope and eternal life rather than solely mourning.
