Allhallowtide Triduum: Life, Death, and Everything In-Between
Allhallowtide Triduum: Life, Death, and Everything In-Between
Let’s take a moment to dive into Allhallowtide, a meaningful three-day spiritual observance that goes beyond the typical Halloween festivities. This isn’t just about costumes and candy or a quiet church service afterward. Allhallowtide invites us to reflect on our lives, remember those we’ve lost, and prepare our hearts for what truly matters.
Here’s a closer look at what each day brings:
October 31 – All Hallows’ Eve (Halloween)
Halloween is more than costumes and candy (though we won’t judge if you indulge). Traditionally, it was a night to confront life’s biggest reality—death. People would pray, fast, and even dress as saints to remind themselves that evil exists but doesn’t have the final say.
“For everything, there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die.” – Ecclesiastes 3:1-2
Today, Halloween gives us a moment to pause and think about how we’re living. Are we walking with faith? Are we investing in what really matters? Because whether life feels long or short, we all get one shot at it.
“You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.” – Mae West
November 1 – All Saints’ Day
This is the day to honor every saint—from famous ones like St. Francis of Assisi to the countless others whose names history has forgotten but who lived faithful, meaningful lives. The message? Holiness isn’t just for the chosen few—it’s something we’re all invited into. The saints show us that living a life of faith and love is possible, even through hardship. Hebrews 12:1 says it best: “We are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses.” These saints are cheering us on as we run this race, reminding us that it’s worth it to keep going, even when things get tough.
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” – Winston Churchill
November 2 – All Souls’ Day
Here’s where things get personal. All Souls’ Day is a chance to remember those we’ve lost—family, friends, and loved ones—and to accept that grief is part of life. It’s not about “getting over it” but about acknowledging that love and loss are intertwined.
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18
On this day, people visit cemeteries, light candles, and say prayers. It’s a way to honor the past and remind ourselves that even though those we love are gone, their memory still shapes us. It’s also a time to be okay with our own grief—because grieving well is part of healing well.
“Grief is the price we pay for love.” – Queen Elizabeth II
Why Allhallowtide Matters
Allhallowtide isn’t just some old-fashioned tradition—it’s a reminder to live intentionally.
Halloween: Face life’s reality—death doesn’t get the last word.
All Saints’ Day: Celebrate the faithful lives that inspire us to live with purpose.
All Souls’ Day: Honor those we’ve lost and make space for healing. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” – Matthew 5:4
These three days teach us that life is fragile, faith matters, and love never dies. So, light a candle, say a prayer, and remember: we’re all running the same race and we don’t have to run it alone.
Acknowledging our feelings during Allhallowtide strengthens our connections with ourselves and others, promoting healing and meaningful living. As we light candles and share prayers, we embrace the full range of human emotions, recognizing that love and loss are part of our shared journey. Whether we feel joy on All Saints’ Day or sadness on All Souls’ Day, we remember that we are not alone. Accepting our emotions helps us honor the past while preparing for the future.
