The Lamb of God: The Old Testament – Part 1/3
The Lamb of God: The Old Testament – Part 1/3
Genesis 22:7-8 – Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?””Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.
Isaiah 53:7 – He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep, before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. Consider the rich symbolism of the lamb in these passages, symbolizing innocence, sacrifice, and redemption. It’s like a preview, giving us a glimpse into the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus. In Genesis, God provides a ram as a stand-in sacrifice for Isaac, setting the stage for something bigger. In Isaiah, the suffering servant is portrayed as a lamb led to the slaughter, foreshadowing the Messiah who would bear the sins of many.
Now, let’s dive into the term Agnus Dei, the Lamb of God in Latin. This beautiful imagery echoes innocence, sacrifice, and redemption, seamlessly tying into the Old Testament’s hints of Christ’s coming.
